This is really about making my Games shortcut folder look better.

I downloaded DUO 2, Echoes and Duotris and out of all of them only the original (old) DUO version and DUOtris icons show up in the extracted items.  DUO 2 and Echoes both show the generic Vista icon for an unknown application.

Any ideas why that would happen folks?

Thumbs attached to illustrate what I mean.

I triple boot 2 XP Pro SP3 and 1 Vista Ultimate SP1 and they all show up in XP just fine.

Could be the Vista just doesnt like the format of the icon embedded into the EXE... Vista likes everything its own way, where as XP is a lot more friendly.

Thanks, that looks like the reason.   The icons show when I'm booted into XP but if I look sat the XP installation from Vista they are gone, so no point in trying to import them.
It's strange that the old DUO and DUOtris would show OK though.

Hi Peter and welcome,

I've replied properly to your email which I believe you've read and, as I've said, it looks OK in Vista here, but I have made a note of the problem and will look into it further when I update to SP1 myself.

I'll have a look into the differences between the mono and DUO icons to see if I can see what might cause one to work and not the other, but IIRC they were created in exacly the same way.

It's a bit of a mystery but luckily not a game breaking one Smiley

Hi,

Yes thanks, I wasn't sure the email got through so had posted here just in case.   It is very strange that the icons I know are there in my XP folder show up similarly generified, if there is such a word, when viewed from Vista.
I'm wracking my brains here as to what might cause this.  I seem to remember reading somewhere how Vista interprets some images differently from XP but can I find that references?  No, of course not!

I remember back in my day of using the DBPro trial version, everyone was always complaining about the icons not working - slected in the compiler to be the *.exe icon but would never show up.

This really is weird.  I even just booted over to XP and backed up up the Binaryzoo folders to removable media and the icons were sure enough showing at that stage.

I open the contents of the CDRW in Vista....poof, they've gone generic.

Problem solved.  It appears that Vista does not like .ico files that are less than 32 X 32 pixels.

See post # 6 here:  http://www.vistaheads.com/forums/microsoft-public-windows-vista-general/220239-program-icons.html#post778555

By using the program mentioned there I now have my program shortcut icons the way they are supposed to look.

Thanks for that info Peter. Smiley  I wont upload a new version of the games just to fix the icons but I'll make sure I do it if/when I do any other revisions.

I remember back in my day of using the DBPro trial version, everyone was always complaining about the icons not working - slected in the compiler to be the *.exe icon but would never show up.
It still doesn't work for me although I haven't upgraded far a little while.  I have to use a hack to get the icons in there.  Tongue
