To Reset Highscore Tables...Or Not?
«

OK here's a *cough* hypothetical scenario. Say I was adding online highscores to a game, lets call it "E", but also want to make a couple of other minor tweaks to the actual gameplay.
Question: What do I do with the highscores players have already set?
Do I ignore the fact they were set under different gameplay conditions and include them in the online highscore tables, or do I delete them and so that everything on the tables is set under exactly the same gameplay conditions?
What do people think is the right thing to do?

Keep 'em. The "right" thing to do is to wipe the slate clean, but the "righteous" thing to do is to keep the high scores.

Just looking at the mods I'm doing to the actual gameplay they are all benefiting the player slightly anyway. So thinking about it the scores set on the old version didn't benefit in any way so there is no reason to exclude them. Doh.
So yeah, allowing older scores makes sense.....although it does mean I need to code a whole new routine to handle them

yeah, in that case it would be extremely unfair to the players if their scores were excluded.

if you want to avoid it you could change the gameplay to make it harder and give yourself a reason to not allow old scores

I think you should
wipe
them as it makes sense for everyone who gets the game to start from scratch and have no headstarts. I have loads of friends who are only gonna get it when highscores are online...
Just my 2 cents

Well that's a different opinion, but as you are the sort of gamer these online highscores are aimed at and are therefore a better judge of this sort of thing than me I'm going to listen
I wont reset everyone's Zoot progress for the highscore tables though as that would be too harsh.

If the game is easier now, leave the scores. The previous scores, achieved with the older, harder version of the game should in theory disappear naturally, no?

That seems like a fair compromise.

In theory yes and TBH I doubt most people will notice the changes.
I just wondered what the fairest thing to do was and whether gamers would prefer the scores reset so they know other gamers didn't get any advantage from playing the older version.

well if the game is harder in the older version then i doubt it will give gamers an advantage.
