LOL spent a full 24 hrs working out .obj format support ..
so ECEed will tie into / have common for mat with some other "bigger apps"
an di have it working for 1 style of .obj .. and just about finished for a 2nd style .

LOL if you use not texture UV data it's all good but soon as you add UVw 's .. or non tris  meshes
i have it working fin with tris , and sort  of getting ther with  quads.

Cool.  Thats impressive.

I know how much hassle model formats are.

I use Deep Exploration for converting model formats.  But it's usualy an absolute nightmare.

.obj format has been around for ages so i agree it's a widely supported format.  Good choice.

One thing i did notice in your video's though, is that when you select an object, mesh or surface, from the list on the left, no indication of selection appears in the 3d view.

I kow alot of 3d packages, surround the selection with abounding box, or what i like to do in my editors is flash the selection for a short duration.  So, you actually get to see whats selected.

Have you thought about doing something similar ?

yeah it does actualy in wavefron 4.0 + version supprots animation in a form that is beyond me .
LOL hyper spline interpolated curves and b -points  and controll surfaces .

infact all reccomendations say ... skip it ... but soon .x format will be dead. DX 11 has no built in .x loader. MS is killing it off for being too messy . LOL

.obj also supports anim by key frames and Delats info .  ie frame 1 , time till next key frame... frame X time till next ....
litteraly just storing the delta'd vectors ' normals as mapping and face asignemnt is done .. on first frame ..

a simple idea ... so a 25 key fram file has 15 sets of verts vectors in it ..
(deformation animation )

it prefers to simple set bones and vert weights ... and then bones are a sub mesh ...
argh i hate animations .lol  .. truthfully i'm just only getting arround to skinning and animating now. i'm a static mesh builder or mechnaical .. not this bio organic crap

Ahh ok.

Thats interesting.  I didn't know that about .obj.

I also didn't know .X format was being scrapped too.  Thats a real suprise.  Max not having X format support as standard was always a real nightmare for me.

Talking of mesh creation, have you ever messed around with Z Brush.  3d Sculpting software.  http://www.pixologic.com/home.php

It allows users to sculpt 3d meshes in a similar way a normal physical sculpter would.  Instead of manipulating polygons and surfaces as you would in a normal 3d app.

You could create some awsome bio space ships with it.

Would add some nice variety.

i have Zbrush 2 .. LOL funny i don;t use it i found it counter intuitive. LOLL  i could paint some nice textures .. but i never got teh carving and sculpting system down . so i gave up  for mor drafting oriented MAx 7

ZB2 sits unused and lonely on my HD .. LOL

i think it's becaus ei took  drafting in school .. the old paper n pecil / pen  drafting (was before CAD, was any place but in areo space industry .. LOL )

max being bassed off of auto desk , well it just fits .

Ahh right.

Yeh i have a copy of it too, but i havn't spent much time learning it.

So of the examples on the website are amazing though.

It's incredible what some people can do with it.

Plus it has the advantage you can paint directly onto the mesh.

I think it's more suited to character work than spaceships though.
