I swear I remember there being one of these threads on these boards, but I couldn't find it. Even the search feature agreed with me, so here it is.

Okay I'm gonna start with a movie that you are either going to hate or love. There is no in-between with this one:

The Fountain (2006)

Instead of explaining brief plot outline, I'm just going to quote one viewer's comments:
Quote
All summaries and attempts to present the plot are futile, because it's truly indescribable. Any summaries you may have read about the plot are null and void – truly, don't judge the film by what it sounds like it will be like. It's a movie you must experience for yourself. And what an experience it is.

The Good:
If you are familiar with the movies PI and Requiem for a dream, then you know the director. But don't expect this to be the next Requiem for a Dream or Pi. This is different.
Also, it is a very, very visual movie. The best part?, it's all (except for one element) non-CGI. They used real-life stuff as their effects. Think fluids and bacteria in a petri dish. Add a camera attached to microscope. Result = awesomeness.

The Bad:
The only negative comment I have is the ending had some too clear buddhism inspired elements, which I personally didn't care for. But it doesn't stop me from recommending it.

if you MUST know what the movie is all about then so be it, even if you are making it less of an experience :

Nope we've never had one.  We don't have a proper Games recommendations one either and that can't be right  Tongue

Anyway movies.  I don't tend to watch many.  Seen too many that are a huge let down to be wasting another couple of hours on them. Having said that they do tend to be big name films and I've seen a few great lesser known ones.

Must say though that writeup does sound like just my sort of movie and the bacteria thing sounds interesting (as I've just wasted another hour on flOw).  I'll check it out.

Here's my latest viewing then....
Hot Fuzz (2007)
Average.  Not as good as Simon Peggs previous film Shaun of the Dead (or Spaced or Hippies for that matter)

was it rgt or llrgt then? I remember us talking about Requiem for a Dream.
I got the idea to watch it after hearing some good comments on it on RGT... Didn't know a thing about the movie before I watched it. Same with the Fountain. I think all movies should be watched like that... without any preconceptions(?) or whatnot. Although that makes finding movies a tad difficult.

I don't tend to watch many.
Hey I watch like one movie in every two months or so... or possibly even less. Tv-series are more of my thing, but movies are quite a different beast... especially when you deal with these artsy movies.

Isn't that why We are the ones making the games and not just playing other peoples games - there just are not enough games worth recommending.

lol hardly.  If you don't like softcore shmups you certainly wont like our stuff Smiley

Anyway I've played a bunch of great games recently on many different systems.  Maybe it's just the PC market that's a bit flat? (can't say as that's the one system I never buy games for)  Some day I'll start that"Game Recommendations" thread I tell ya.  Tongue

lol.  Nah I've bought 2 boxed games in 6 years (both from the Total War series) and downloaded a couple more.  Pretty much all I play on the PC is other freeware titles as that's what I find most interesting. Smiley

Idi I Smotri (Come and See) 1985 Russia

http://imdb.com/title/tt0091251/

Amazing. I guess it would be considered a war film, though I would consider it more of a Psychological Thriller. The base story is about a child who is taken into a russian battalion during WW2 and what ensues. It is about 20 times deeper than that, though.

The film is very haunting, and very disturbing.

Oldboy 2003 Korea

http://imdb.com/title/tt0364569/

Anyone familiar with Chan-Wook Parks movies knows to expect a very insane story, with tons of twists and turns. This movie is the top of his game. The basic plot outline is that a man is imprisoned for 15 years, and then suddenly let out and wants vengeance, but doesn't know where to start. Saying much more than that would ruin it.

Brick 2005 USA

http://imdb.com/title/tt0393109/

This is a bit of a weird film. Its a noir story that takes place around the crime ring of a High School. Don't let the fact that this movie takes place around a school put you off... The basic plot would be that a kid is trying to figure out what happened to an ex-girlfriend who suddenly disapeared. Once again, if I said more, the movie would be spoiled.

Memento 2000 USA

http://imdb.com/title/tt0209144/

A reverse-chronological pyscholigucal thriller about a man who has no short term memory. The last thing he remembers is he wife being raped and murdered.

Irréversible 2002 France

http://imdb.com/title/tt0290673/

This movie is very graphic, so if you don't like that kinda stuff, ignore this. Another reverse-chronological film. It follows the events of one night in Paris. Much more would be spoiling it.

You have knack for picking out kinda "graphic" films. Tongue
I've heard that oldboy is indeed insane and I don't think I will be watching that one.

hmm... must check out the Brick - I remember checking out the website before it had been released. but that was a long time ago.

Reservoir Dogs

A must see for anyone who likes twisted, cops n robbers, gangster kind of films.

Goodfella's

Another great movie, by Martin Scorsese.. Very full bodied gangster movie starring Joe Pesci, Ray Liotta, Robert DeNiro.

The Untouchables

Go back into the 1930's where illegal liquer was being distributed by crooked folks. Sean Connery, Robert DeNiro.

Casino

Another full bodied, blood covered gangster movie with Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci, and a few other famous faces.

A Bronx Tale

Again.. Joe Pesci, Robert DeNiro, and Chaz Paminteri.

Fearless

An incredible journey starring Jet Li, english subtitles.. Filled with action-packed martial arts, blood, and beautiful scenes of china.

Unleashed

Also a brilliant movie with Jet Li, starring Morgan Freeman & Bob Hoskin.

The Shining

This film is summed up all in one quote "Heres Johnny!"

Full Metal Jacket

A very graphic look at the life of a soldier, starting from the first day of training, to the voyage into war with an enemy country.

This movie was amazing. And I completely agree with how all summaries of the plot are useless. Aronofsky did it for me again!

I like Sharif's old stuff like Dr. Zhivago.

Another recommendation for The Fountain from Eric ech?  I'll see if I can get that over Easter then because as usual there's nothiing decent on TV.
