I'm currently getting a miniature ready for a painting competition...
Cool.  I didn't even know that was a thing.

What miniature you doing?  Is it a bought one or do you have to make the miniature too? I know you've made them before.

It's a big thing in the hobby circle...

https://golden-demon.com/

There are a few categories to enter such as single miniature, squad (3 models or more), monster and vehicles.

I am entering the single miniature category and hopefully the vehicle! Pics on twitter will likely follow.

Wow some of those are incredible.  I have neither the skill, patience or steady hand necessary for anything like that.  BunnyMonkey!

Yeah, they put my miniatures to shame but are great inspiration for getting better!

I have had time to think about some game programming stuff this week and my little clone project is having a slight change of tack.
I've streamlined the UI now, so there's a menu page (with game playing in the background via an AI agent), with the ability to start the game or mute the sound/music.
The game screen which displays a score and a highscore.
When you get a game over, I overlay a simple game over effect for N seconds then revert to the main menu.

I realise I have been distracted by UI etc and not with making the games which is the entire point of these clones Tongue I've also been spending too much time on graphics when just simple shapes in colours would work fine.

The idea being I want to get my chops up making these clones to then spend my time making my own game, escape from robot factory Smiley

You've no doubt seen this sort of thing before, but as it's all new to me this guy is a great watch.

I'll give that a watch, sculpting is a great skill but takes so much practice, worth it though for results like that!

EDIT: I did some coding too;

Managed to make my simplified template which will be standardised across my clones.
As the focus is on cloning the games instead of plussing them I'm still going ahead with the simplified representation of the games instead of spending hours on graphics.
Also opted on removing the music and focussing on sounds so the games are still faithful.
I've decreased the resolution to 800x600 and all games wiill be built with that in mind.
I'm going to continue robotron but using these new rules as I'm enjoying building it Smiley

Any reason for that choice?  It seems low by current standards, but I can't claim to be clued up on latest user expectations regarding resolution.

Yeah, 4:3 and smaller screen so less to worry about Tongue

This is only for the games i'm planning on cloning.
When I eventually get to my own stuff I'll have 1280x720 and 1024x768 Smiley

It's a great game and I'm enjoying making this more than I was making Robotron surprisingly.

The mechanics all just click together, so It's quite easy to build the game up in stages.
As of yesterday I managed to get the pathfinding working so they can take the best route to the player, I now need to modify each ghost slightly to behave like the real game.
Sorted the power pellet behaviour, when you collect it it causes the ghosts to go into runaway mode for 5 seconds, just need to make them flash blue/white in the last second.

And you're right, there's plenty of scope for new ideas even as simple as making new mazes, adding more ghosts, different powerups etc.

Yeah it's one of the reasons I like building my games around old arcade games.  They feel like basic game design sketches of proven gameplay just waiting to be fleshed out with new ideas.

Looking forward to a bit of playtesting Smiley

Shouldn't be too long now Smiley

Last night I managed to stagger the starting of each ghost enemy, so a new enemy is introduced into the level every 5 seconds.
I added the extra behaviours, so we now have a Chase mode (they all behave the same, unlike actual pac-man), a scatter mode and a flee mode.
I removed the game over screen as it didn't add anything and Iam going to make the title screen more informative then it's done Smiley

So, I just need to sort out the flee mode then I think it's done!

I added blue/white flashing for the last second of flee mode.
Fixed a few issues I was having with the pathfinding, in that generating a new path would tank the ghosts...
Before the game starts (and acting as a deliberate delay) I show the controls and a press any key prompt.
Could probably do with adding some sound effects as the game is a touch stale Tongue
It's been fun and only a 2 week development.

I do have plans of my next project and it's going to be a custom thing and completely monochrome! Cheesy
